A Transmission Solution
SunTrain alleviates transmission bottlenecks that are stalling the development and generation of renewable energy. SunTrain offers a seamless solution by storing gigawatt hours of clean energy from remote solar and wind farms in its battery railcars, which are then transported via unit trains over existing railroad networks.
North America's vast railroad system provides an immediate, alternative connection between renewable energy producers, substation nodes and rail-served power plants while bypassing the congested transmission grid.
The U.S. national grid lacks sufficient transmission capacity to meet current or projected demand for low-cost electricity from renewable sources, which are often located far from load centers. On average, it takes 10 to 20 years to build a new transmission line at a cost of $2.3 million per mile. To meet future demand, transmission capacity must triple by 2050 compared to 2020 levels, at an estimated cost of $2.4 trillion, according to Princeton researchers.
